INTRODUCTION

Mr. Godfrey Martin Araujo B.Sc. MBBS, FRCS Ed, FRCPS  Glasg. is a classical trained scholar who switched disciplines to do a first degree at UWI St. Augustine in Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry. He entered UWI Mona in 1982 and completed his MBBS in 1987, finishing his internship in 1989, following which he spent 5 years in the UK specializing in Orthopaedics and attaining the FRCS Ed. and FRCPS Glasg. qualifications in 1993 and 1194 respectively.

He returned to Trinidad in 1995 and joined the Government service at Port of Spain General Hospital where he served until 2007 when he went fully into private practice to allow him to develop his chosen sub-specialty interests of Hand and Upper Limb Surgery as well as Arthroscopy. He has attended many training courses, seminars and  workshops including cadaveric practice labs and conferences in pursuing the improvement of his knowledge and skill base in the practice of this specialized area of orthopaedics. He has established links with Hand Surgeons in other countries for collaboration in treatment of cases and for further referral for even more advanced treatment options where the local facilities are not available. He has partnered with the Touching Hand Project – the medical outreach arm of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand- to pioneer collaborative assessment and surgical treatment of complex congenital and post traumatic hand and upper limb problems via his NGO: Caribbean Health Foundation in conjunction with the Princess Elizabeth Centre for Handicapped Children. This is one of his ways of giving back to his society.

Mr, Araujo is the Co-founder and co- Director of FAOC- the only integrated Orthopaedic Group practice in TnT.  The collection of a senior level General Practitioner, an internationally trained Neurosurgeon, a UK based Visiting Foot & Ankle Specialist, a leading Lower Limb Orthopaedic Specialist, as well as a Hand and Upper Limb sub-specialist means that such a collaborative effort enhances the diagnosis and management of our patients. We run a first class service to which we are dedicated.

He continues to maintain an active interest in the management of trauma for the expert management of the upper and lower limbs for internal fixation and reconstruction of complex injuries. Mr. Araujo extensively utilizes Musculo-Skeletal Ultrasound (with emphasis on ultrasound guided injections where needed) for the diagnosis and management of his patients.  He has recently introduced a world class service for the prescription and crafting of custom orthotics for patients with foot and ankle conditions.

He also has an ongoing practice in the diagnosis and the management of arthritic conditions where he has helped to introduce Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) as a treatment modality for arthritis, tendonitis, and wound management. The combination of PRP and Hyaluronic Acid has proven especially effective in altering the course of the ubiquitous problem of osteoarthritis in our society.

Knee, Shoulder and Wrist Arthroscopy in addition to small joints ( ankle, thumb, and  big  toe) are special areas of further interest and development for the treatment of traumatic and chronic problems in these joints.

Mr. Araujo holds membership with several Orthopaedic Societies such as the Caribbean Association  of Orthopaedic Surgeons, AAOS,: The American  Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, The International Cartilage Research Society , and the Society of Surgeons
